Viewing events decades old and being removed from the daily suffering the WWII generation was going through one can forget the reality of those times. World War II introduced the concept of total war on a worldwide scale. Civilians were being deliberately bombed by both sides in an attempt to reduce their will to continue fighting. In the case of Japan the status of non combatant was given to very few. Every man and woman was being trained and prepared to fight the anticipated American invasion in one last suicidal gesture for the Empire. When the Emperor was prepared to announce the surrender a corps of junior officers attempted a coup. This was after they had had two atomic bombs dropped on them.

If an invasion had been necessary the civilian casualties would probably have been larger than those from the two atomic blasts. And all the while this was going on American servicemen were still fighting and dying on Pacific islands and the Asian continent. If the American people found out that the president had a weapon that could end the war in a few days and did not use it out of consideration for the Japanese civilian population he very likely would have been impeached. It was an awful decision to make but I believe that any other alternative would not have ended the war any less bloodily.

Thanks for your comments. I understand that Japan did not go down without a fight. However, I believe that there could have been alternate decisions made rather than killing Innocent civilians. Had targets been set toward a military resource then I agree that Japan and her leaders should have been met with swift retaliation, but to target those that could not defend themselves, does not look to be the best decision made by our government. .

Mike,

Thanks for your comments Mike, and yes I agree that nuclear weapons are deterrent to war. My problem is that the target was a civilian populated city, not a military target.
