I live close to Dowagiac,Mi. I’ve been to the Mill Pond where James Heddon threw the carved piece of wood into the pond . Heddon had a plant in Dowagiac and I believe it closed in 1983. The plant hired mainly females. In the early days of manufacturing these female employees hand painted the lures. They made some nice rod and reels also. The Heddon “pal”I believe was the most popular rod & reel combo. I once was told that Heddon took over the Daisy corporation after WW2 and they made the Daisy BB guns in the Dowagiac plant. Dowagiac is a small city 6,000 pop just north of South Bend , Indiana in SW Michigan. Dowagiac has a rich industrial history . The Round Oak stove foundry was also there and they manufactured the Round Oak parlor stoves. These old stoves are beautiful and are collectors item. Dowagiac was once the furnace capital of the world. Several furnace and stove manufactures were located there. It was nicknamed “Stove Town”. There is a history museum in Dowagiac it’s very interesting. The museum has large collection of Heddon lures and other products Heddon manufactured. There is a large collection of stoves Round Oak manufactured also. Dowagiac, Mi is also the Headquarters of the Potawatomi Indian nation the museum has a display of the Potawatomi people. The museum also has displays of capt Ivan Kincheloe test pilot America’s first spaceman the first man to fly over 100,000 ft. Capt Kincheloe was a 1945 Dowagiac graduate. The Underground Railroad, Edward Lowe inventor of Kitty Litter. Dowagiac was the first stop west from New York City for the first Orphan Train in the 1850s. Other notable Dowagiac residents. Billie Gordon (actor, model, author) Chris Taylor wrestler was largest Olympian. 1972 Munich Olympics. Bronze medal. Judith Ivey (actress) attended Dowagiac Union High. Franz Jackson jazz/blues musician. Webb Miller Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist was a Dowagiac High graduate. The Webb Miller story I found the most interesting. I believe it should be made into a movie. Dowagiac has many more notable residents
If you ever find yourself in the area of Notre Dame/South Bend take the 25 minute drive north to Dowagiac ,Mi and check this three floor history museum out. It’s worth the visit. While there go Downtown to Carusos 10 minute walk from the museum. This old fashioned soda fountain/lunch counter place will take you back in time .The Malts are outstanding and if you like chocolate hand dipped candies this is your place. Carusos was started in the 1920s by the Caruso family from Chicago and the place (interior) hasn’t changed since.
