My father’s family is Polish Jews and while his father was already in the US by the time the Nazis came to power, we did have family members still in Poland when the war came and they died in the Holocaust. My father ended up in the Army Air Corps (logistics, not pilot) in the Pacific, which is why I am here today. His unit was the first one into a small town in the northern Philippines after the Japanese evacuated and he met my mom at a liberation fiesta. I came along six years later.
