I had to wear a 2 layered fibreglass cast over like a weird white squared bubble wrap, on my left arm, back in October of 1998. My grade 7 class took a trip to Camp Sarradaca, and there is a forest of trees around. My teacher said… “now class, DON’T CLIMB THE TREES”!!!! Of course, I never listened and I PAID THE HUGE PRICE! A hairline fracture.

In reply to <a href="https://hankeringforhistory.com/history-of-the-cast/#comment-286">nanya</a>.

Haha, ya. I have never had to wear a cast, but sometimes envied those that did. On that note, I tried to find the history behind where signing casts started and I had no luck.... :(

When I was in elementary school I really wanted to have a cast. Of course, I had given no thought to the pain and expense that went with it. I could only think of how cool it was to have a cast signed by everyone you knew.

Fortunately, I've only need a cast once - back in the 60's when I broke my wrist after my friend fell on me while we were horsing around. That was a plaster cast and it wasn't just my wrist but the whole forearm. Damn thing itched bad and all I could do was whack the cast for some relief. Can't recall how long I had the cast but since then I've been very careful....lol!
